The present study analyzed the physiological significance of the dominant follicle (DF) and its removal on the superovulatory response of 42 Nellore cows and tested the hypothesis that the number of subordinate small follicles (3-8mm) could be used as a single criterion for the evaluation of the presence or absence of a DF in the ovaries. Ultrasonographic examinations were performed two days before the beginning of superovulatory treatment (D0) and the cows divided into three groups: group without DF (NDF), group with a DF (DF) and group with an aspirated DF (ADF). Effect of an energy-deficient diet on populations of ciliate protozoans in bovine rumen

Ten young rumen-cannulated crossbred steers were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (C; n=4), which was fed a balanced diet for daily weight gain of 900g; and a pronounced energy-deprived group (PED; n=6), receiving 30% less of the required energy for maintenance. After 140 days of these alimentary regimes, rumen fluid and urine samples were collected for biochemical and functional tests, before feeding and at 1, 3, 6, and 9 hours after feeding. The aim of the experiment was to determine whether charcoal-treated bovine follicular fluid (bFF) removed from visible (< 22 mm) follicles altered the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in intact and ovariectomized prepubertal heifers. After a 10-ml injection of bFF given at three consecutive 8-h intervals, secretion of FSH was depressed in approximately 44% of the ovariectomized heifers but there was no effect in intact heifers. When the bFF treatment ceased, there were no rebound effects on FSH concentrations above that of controls pretreatment levels. The effect of concentration and exposure period of bovine oocytes to butyrolactone I (BLI) on meiotic block and in vitro maturation (IVM) kinetics was studied. In experiment 1, all oocytes were at germinal vesicle stage (GV), after 6h in culture with 0, 50 and 100µM BLI. After 12h, all oocytes cultured with 50 and 100µM BLI remained in GV. After 24h, less oocytes were in GV with 50µM (82%) than with 100µM BLI (99%, P<0.05). In experiment 2, after 6h IVM, 93% of control oocytes (IVM only) were in GV, while treated oocytes (100µM BLI for 6, 12 or 24h prior to IVM) showed less oocytes in GV with increased exposure period to BLI prior to IVM (83 and 73%, for 6h and 12h, P<0.05). The effects of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) on in vitro maturation (IVM) (experiment I) and on in vitro embryo development (experiment II) of bovine oocytes fertilized in vitro, were evaluated in terms of cleavage (CR), blastocyst (BR) and hatching (HR) rates. ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the Rolipram during the maturation of bovine oocytes and gene expression of embryos produced in vitro. Bovine ovaries were collected in slaughterhouse. The COCs were selected and divided into 5 groups: Control 0 time; Control: IVM for 24 hours; Rolipram treatments with IVM blocking for 24 hours in maturation medium containing (100, 150 and 200µM). O Pantanal Mato-Grossense, uma extensa planicie aluvial de aproximadamente 140.000 km2, divide-se em diversas sub-regioes de acordo com suas caracteristicas e tem como principal atividade economica a criacao de bovinos de corte. A sub-regiao da Nhecolandia se caracteriza por solos extremamente arenosos, topografia plana e presenca de muitas lagoas. A precipitacao pluviometrica media anual no local de estudo, obtida de dados coletados nos ultimos quatro anos, e de 1210 mm, sendo que 75% ocorrem de outubro a marco. Nesse trabalho determinou-se a prevalência de A. marginale em rebanhos bovinos criados em oito microrregiões de Rondônia e quatro microrregiões do Acre através da utilização da técnica da reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) utilizada para amplificação de um fragmento de 458 pb do gene msp5. Verificou-se uma taxa de prevalência de 98,6% nas amostras provenientes de Rondônia e de 92,87% nas amostras provenientes do Acre.
